When you thinking of landscape improvements, what services do you picture first? Chances are a retaining wall is at the bottom of that list compared to the ever-popular pool, patio, outdoor kitchen, and garden. It’s easy to overlook how retaining walls can be an amazing asset to your property and outdoor aesthetic. To prove it, here are some of the benefits of adding it on to your landscape design:

It adds dimension to your landscape. A great example is the photo used above. Before, the home had a large hill on their property that was not adding anything to the aesthetic of their backyard. Installing the retaining wall and steps made it safer to walk the grounds, easier to split it off for softscape needs, and easier to get to the patio space on the more leveled part of the land. Plus, they added a lot of value to their property that will help them make more off of their home if they decide to sell.

It adds property value. As discussed above, retaining walls will add value to your property. It’s common for homes to have some hills, which could potentially be a flooding issue as well as make it harder to organize the space into a garden. Separating it into levels makes the space seem larger and give more opportunity to add flowers, bushes, or other plants.

It adds unique style. Retaining walls can be made of a variety of materials including wood, concrete, boulders, bricks, or concrete blocks to fit the aesthetic you want for your landscape. The design will always need to prioritize function, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Bricks, for example, come in a variety of colors, so you can even request a pattern or mix of colors to give your landscape some extra flair.

It slows down soil erosion. Hills, dips, ponding, and other uneven landmarks are typically a result of natural erosion. While they’re usually harmless, they can also promote the wrong type of water drainage on your lawn so that water goes towards your home instead of away from it. Luckily, retaining walls are also a good way to solve that issue.
