Don't Wait for Spring: Start Your Backyard Project in the Fall
Missed the window for a summer backyard remodel and think you have to wait until next spring?
Think again.
Oftentimes, people assume that their dream backyard project can’t be started when winter is only months away. However, fall can be the best time to start a project.. Summer is the busiest time for hardscaping and landscaping companies, and fall is when projects are finally wrapping up. With fewer overall projects, this means that your backyard project can be completed on a shorter timeline. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, you’ll still be able to enjoy your backyard before winter truly hits.
And the best part: if you build now, then your new backyard will be ready as soon as the snow melts in the spring.
Don’t wait for next spring — here’s why you should start your backyard project in the fall.
Why Fall is the Best Time to Start Your Backyard Project in Minnesota
If you live in Minnesota, you’re already more than aware just how cold it can get once fall comes around. However, the cooler weather doesn’t mean your project is off the table quite yet. In our state, we have a surprisingly large window to start (and finish) projects before the ground freezes.
This means homeowners can get their outdoor projects completely done well before winter. We often find with our fall projects that our clients can still use their backyard for a few months until it turns cold.
On the flip side, if you wait until spring you also have to wait for the ground to un-freeze. This oftentimes takes longer than proactively starting a project in the fall. It’s not uncommon for the soil to still be frozen well into late April. On the flipside, the ground doesn’t start becoming frozen until late October, early November at the earliest. That’s a much longer falltime window than a springtime one.

Backyard Projects that Can be Completed in the Fall
Fortunately, there are a ton of projects that can be designed and built before winter arrives in Minnesota. Some smaller projects include:
- Planting and winterizing trees, shrubs, and plants
- Installing outdoor kitchens and outdoor dining spaces
- Building decks, patios, pergolas, and gazebos
- Installing in-ground pools
- Crafting fire pits, paver spaces, and stone driveways
- Laying down stepping stone paths and gravel pathways
There are a large number of projects that can be finished more quickly than you think. If you have any questions about what can be done before the ground freezes, contact our team with any questions.
What’s the Cut-Off for Backyard Projects in Minnesota?
Now that you know there’s still time, you might be wondering just how much time you have to start your project. As a general rule, our professionals at Outdoor Innovation Landscaping will continue on projects as long as the ground isn’t frozen. That way, we can still dig and do all the necessary work to finish the project. However, this is only specific to the projects that require some digging and more in-ground solutions.
If you’re hoping to get above-ground projects done, we can even do some of those year-round. Our team can get a head start on project design planning for the spring, install patios and fire pits, and even build decks, retaining walls, and stairs for your space—all without needing the ground thawed.
