How to Keep Your Pool Deck (& All Your Concrete Pavers) Gorgeous for Years

A swimming pool and the surrounding landscape or pool deck are not a cheap investment. While you know how to maintain your pool to keep it beautiful and safe to swim in, your pool deck or concrete pavers also need some love.

Maintaining the look and durability of your pool deck and concrete pavers requires preventative measures, regular cleaning, and more. Outdoor Innovations has put together these recommendations to keep your pool area looking as good as the day we installed it for years!

Regular Cleaning

Regularly cleaning your pool deck or concrete pavers is a no-brainer. This is the number one way to keep everything looking great. Start by using a leaf blower or broom to remove debris like leaves, dirt, and twigs.

You can also hose down your concrete pavers or deck with water to remove loose dirt and grime. A pressure washer on low can also help remove dirt and grime. If algae or moss grows on your deck or pavers, a pressure washer can also help with this, but avoid high-pressure water as it can damage the surfaces.

Stain Removal

If something spills, like cooking oil, grease, or cocktails from your most recent party, make sure you clean them up immediately. Blot up liquids and clean with a mild detergent if necessary. For stains like grease and oil, use a commercial concrete cleaner or make a paste with baking soda and water. Scrub gently and rinse completely.

Weed Control

Weeds can crop up anywhere, even between the cracks in your pavers. While it may not happen in the first year of your new backyard renovation, do check joints between pavers for weed growth over time.

Pull them out by hand if you can. Or you may use a weed killer if necessary, but be careful of toxic substances if your pets or children hang out on the patio or deck.

Protect from Chlorine

Chlorine from your pool can damage concrete surfaces over time. Make sure you rinse the deck or patio after each pool use to remove the chlorine and keep it from building up over time. A quick spray with your hose should suffice as long as you rinse the surface after each swim session.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Harsh chemicals should be avoided when cleaning your pool deck or concrete pavers. Use only appropriate chemicals for these areas; otherwise, you could see damage appear that may be pricy to repair.

Avoid cleaners that contain lye or acid because these chemicals can penetrate your porous concrete and weaken its durability. And be wary of any chemical cleaners with labels that warn to keep away from children and pets.

Professional Maintenance

Regular inspections by a professional who specializes in concrete or decks can help with your regular maintenance. They can tell when something might be repaired, which can be fixed right away, rather than waiting for it to get worse.

Pros will also perform expert cleanings with specialized equipment that thoroughly removes stains, chlorine build-up, grime, weeds, and more, so your concrete and pavers will look spotless.

Plan to get professional cleaning and maintenance at least every 2-3 years for the best results and to ensure long-lasting surfaces.

Prep for Winter

When winter rolls around, try to prevent ice and snow accumulation on your deck and patio. Since concrete is porous, water can seep into it, and when that water freezes, it can cause the concrete to expand or shift. Over time, this wears down your concrete.

Be sure to use snow shovels with plastic edges to avoid scratching the surface, though.

Resealing or Resurfacing

Depending on your pool deck and pavers' age and wear and tear, you might consider resealing or resurfacing them. This can help maintain their appearance and structural integrity for even longer. Sealants are designed to withstand stains, UV ray discoloration, and chlorine build-up..

Plus, for concrete pavers, sealing them helps repel water and prevent it from seeping in and causing cracks.
